Assistants answer before anyone clicks
Search is moving from ten blue links to a written answer with a few citations underneath it. If your page is not one of those citations, you are invisible to the buyer even when you rank well in the old sense.
Being cited comes down to two things. A machine has to be able to pull a clear claim out of your page, and it has to have a reason to trust it. Most advice covers the first and ignores the second.
Write answer-first content
Put a direct answer in plain language near the top of the page, then expand underneath. A model summarising your page takes the first clean statement it finds. If your opening three paragraphs are about your journey and your values, that is what gets quoted back.
Use headings that match the question a buyer would actually type. “How much does an AI agent cost to run” beats “Our pricing philosophy” in both kinds of search.
Make your pages machine-readable
- Add structured data for your organisation, services, FAQs and articles
- Keep pages fast and crawlable, with clean URLs and real internal links
- Decide deliberately which AI crawlers you allow in robots.txt, then open the file and check it says that
- Put facts in text, not inside an image of a table
None of this is new. What changed is the cost of getting it wrong, because a machine now reads the page on the buyer's behalf and never comes back for a second look.
Build consistent entity signals
Describe who you are and what you do the same way on your website, your profiles and every directory you appear in. Ten variations read as ten weak signals. One wording repeated reads as a single strong one.
The same holds for your name, your locations and your service list. Consistency is what lets a model join the mentions into one organisation it can name with confidence.
Earn the trust half
Extraction gets you quoted. Trust gets you recommended. Trust builds from mentions in sources a model already weights: industry press, real customer accounts, credible directories, and writing specific enough to be worth citing at all.
A page that restates the consensus gives an assistant no reason to pick you over anyone else saying the same thing. Publish the method, the number or the lesson that nobody else has written down.
How to tell whether it is working
- Ask the assistants your buyers use, with the questions your buyers ask, and record who gets cited
- Watch referral traffic from assistant domains separately from ordinary search traffic
- Track branded search volume, which rises when people hear your name in an answer and go looking
Do the first one by hand, once a month. It takes twenty minutes and tells you more than any dashboard currently can.
